How to obtain a Portuguese Criminal Record
Australians citizens who have resided in Portugal for any period of time may require a Portuguese Police clearance certificate for such purposes as court proceedings, residency permits or overseas employment.
Under the Australian Privacy Act 1988, the Australian Embassy in Lisbon cannot obtain confidential information on Australian citizens or Australian residents from any police force.
As a result, a person seeking a police check from Portugal must apply and obtain this information directly from the Portuguese authorities.
For local residents in Portugal who require to obtain a Portuguese police clearance certificate (certificado do registo criminal), they will need to apply, in person, either at the General Department for Justice Administration (Direcção Geral da Administraçao da Justiça - DGAJ) or at the Lojas do Cidadão (please see below for contact details):
