The Cannes Film Festival jury awarded Australian actor David Gulpilil with the Best Actor prize for his performance in Rolf de Heer's film Charlie's Country


Charlie's Country was shot in Darwin and was the Northern Territory’s actor third collaboration with director de Heer, after Ten Canoes and The Tracker.


David Gulpilil made his feature film debut in Nicolas Roeg’s 1971 film Walkabout. He has since worked on a string of popular productions including Storm Boy, Crocodile Dundee, Baz Luhrman’s Australia, Nick Cave’s The Proposition and Rabbit Proof Fence.
